The local newsletter stack: the tools behind a city or county newsletter

The short version

Four useful facts before you keep reading.

  1. 01

beehiiv sends the email and holds the list.

  2. 02

lightbreak gathers local content and builds each issue.

  3. 03

greetform asks new subscribers questions and shows them offers.

  4. 04

larkfeed runs the website: news, a business directory, events and jobs.

A local newsletter has jobs a national one does not. It needs local events, new businesses and local news every week, a way to learn who its readers are, and a website that local businesses want to be listed on.

This is the stack we run ourselves. Three of the four tools, lightbreak, greetform and larkfeed, are owned by 8th Replay, the company behind this site. They are listed with the same facts-only treatment as every other tool, and you can swap any of them for another tool in the directory.

What each one is

beehiiv

An all-in-one platform for publishing, growing and earning from newsletters, podcasts, digital products, communities and websites. Publishing a newsletter and growing and earning from it in one place.

lightbreak

Newsletter software for local media that gathers local content, writes it in your voice and builds one issue. Producing a local email newsletter issue and pushing it to an email platform.

greetform

A form that appears after someone subscribes, asks a few questions and shows offers matched to the answers. Asking new subscribers questions and turning answers into offers and leads.

larkfeed

An AI-native platform for local media that combines news, a business directory, events and a job board. Running a local media website and selling listings, events, jobs and sponsorships.

How the four fit together

The sending platform holds the list and delivers the email. lightbreak pushes a finished issue to an email platform such as beehiiv or ActiveCampaign. greetform syncs answers to beehiiv, ActiveCampaign and Mailchimp as subscriber fields. larkfeed works with lightbreak and greetform and can import a beehiiv archive.

None of this is required to start. A sending platform alone is enough for issue one, and the rest earn their place as the list and the work grow.

Does beehiiv have a free plan?

Yes. The free plan costs $0 and supports up to 2,500 subscribers, 1 publication and 1 team seat. It includes unlimited email sends, landing pages and templates, and beehiiv branding stays on the newsletter.

Does lightbreak replace my email platform?

No. You do not need to switch platforms, and subscribers stay where they are.

Is greetform free?

Yes. The Free plan needs no card and covers 250 new subscribers a month, one publication and one live survey.

Does AI publish articles on its own?

No. A person reviews and approves every article.
