What we assume
- Every reader pays monthly, so there is one card payment per paying subscriber each month. Annual subscriptions mean fewer payments and fewer 30 cent charges.
- Card fees use Stripe's published rate for US cards: 2.9% plus 30 cents a payment. International cards and currency conversion cost more.
- Plan prices are the month-to-month prices. beehiiv and Kit both charge less if you pay for a year up front. No discounts, trials or limited-time offers are counted.
- beehiiv and Kit price by subscriber count in steps. If your count falls between two steps, we use the next step up.
- We use the lowest-priced plan that lists paid subscriptions: Lite on beehiiv (Pro above 100,000 subscribers), and Kit's free plan up to 10,000 subscribers (Creator above that). Kit's free plan keeps Kit branding on your emails and has no automations.
- Substack's help page lists Stripe's 0.7% fee for recurring billing, so we count it for Substack. beehiiv's and Kit's pricing pages list no such fee, so we count none for them. Kit says its 3.5% plus 30 cents already includes card processing.
- Refunds, chargebacks, sales tax, in-app purchases and Substack's optional $50 custom domain are left out.
- This compares fees only. It does not say which platform will grow your newsletter.
