What Stripe is
Stripe processes card and other payments. Newsletter operators can use Payment Links to sell a subscription or one-time purchase without code, or Stripe Billing for recurring plans.
Stripe Billing includes a customer portal where customers manage their own subscriptions, and tools for failed payment retries. Automatic tax calculation is available at extra cost.
Many paid newsletter and membership tools connect to a Stripe account for payments.
Who it is for
Stripe Billing is built for fast-scaling businesses, including software, marketplaces, platforms and online stores. It serves startups and large companies alike.
For a newsletter operator, Stripe is the tool that takes the money. A writer who wants to charge for a paid tier, a one-time guide or a tip jar can use it directly, or can use a newsletter tool that connects to it. It is a payments service, not a place to write or send email.
What you can do with it
Stripe's selling and billing tools include Payment Links, Checkout, a pricing table, free trials and a customer portal. Payment Links need no code and no website. A link can sell a product, start a subscription or collect a tip.
A link can be shared by email or text, turned into a QR code, or embedded as a buy button. Stripe Billing adds invoices, prorations, Smart Retries for failed payments, recovery automations and cancellation surveys. Reports cover billing analytics and revenue recovery.
Plans and pricing
Stripe's standard plan has no setup or monthly fee. It charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful domestic card payment. There is also a custom plan for high-volume businesses, with negotiated rates.
Stripe Billing is an add-on. It is sold as a monthly plan on a one-year contract, or as pay as you go at 0.7% of Billing volume. Stripe Tax, Radar fraud screening and invoicing each carry their own fees. Standard payouts are free. Instant payouts cost 1.5% of volume, with a 50 cent minimum.
What it works with
Payment links can be made through the Stripe API, with code samples in Node.js, Ruby, Python, PHP, Java, Go and .NET. Platforms can use Stripe Connect to let their own users create links.
Stripe Billing has accounting and CRM integrations, a NetSuite connector, and data exports to Snowflake, Amazon Redshift, Databricks, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Storage. There is also the Stripe App Marketplace and a partner network.
Things to know before you choose
Payment Links support these currencies: AUD, CAD, EUR, GBP, INR, JPY, MXN, PHP and USD. Subscription links bill monthly or yearly.
Several Billing tools cost extra, including automatic tax calculation and usage-based billing. Usage-based billing is a separate product from Stripe Billing. Limits such as maximum amounts are not published on the Payment Links page. A separate page covers prohibited and restricted businesses. Support is available 24/7 by email, phone or chat.
